Padmaavat is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language epic period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions. It is based on the 16th-century epic poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, which tells the story of Rani Padmavati of Mewar, a legendary Rajput queen known for her beauty. The film stars Deepika Padukone as Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as her husband Maharawal Ratan Singh, and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, the Sultan of Delhi who is obsessed with Padmavati.
The film begins with the marriage of Padmavati and Ratan Singh. They live happily in the kingdom of Mewar until Khilji hears of Padmavati's beauty and decides to conquer Mewar to possess her. Khilji attacks Mewar, but Ratan Singh and his army put up a fierce resistance. Khilji eventually defeats Ratan Singh and captures him. However, Padmavati commits jauhar (self-immolation) to avoid being captured by Khilji.
Padmaavat is a lavishly produced film with stunning visuals and costumes. It is also a well-acted film with strong performances from the entire cast. However, the film was controversial upon its release, with some Rajput groups protesting against it for its alleged historical inaccuracies and for depicting Padmavati in a negative light.
